Garranos are kept free grazing all year round, taking advantage of the mountain areas, using woodlands, natural pastures and tree pastures. Their diet is very varied and depends on the variety of species present at different times of the year.
In spring they prefer the buds and flowers of bushes and the more tender leaves of trees. Among the plant species we can highlight: gorse, broom, carqueja, bramble, genista and some grasses and legumes that occur naturally in mountain pastures. With regard to tree pastures, we can highlight: oak, birch, strawberry tree, holly, beech, of which they consume the young leaves and the berries when they are ripe.
