Activities and behaviors

Feeding:

It occupies around 50% of daily activity and essentially consists of grazing.

Resting:

They spend about 30% of their time resting. Standing or lying down, it is a period of relaxation and decreased attention. This activity includes periods spent sleeping during the day (horses are able to sleep standing up thanks to an anatomical mechanism that allows them to stand with little muscular effort).

Locomotion:

It consists of short trips, guided by the lead mare, between resources or brief social interactions with other herds.

Care and grooming:

It takes little time, but is extremely important. They roll on land or water to treat their fur and control insects. In the herd, they generally take care of each other, placing themselves in a “head to tail” position, allowing the back to be cleaned. In addition to cleaning, it helps strengthen bonds between individuals.

Comfort and leisure:

They have different behaviors, such as playing, exploring through smell, stimulation, spending time in the sun or in cooler areas. Between the female and the juvenile it is common to observe this type of interaction in order to reinforce bonds.

Alert:

There can be several warning situations:

  • When the female is taking care of her cub;
  • There are predators in the vicinity;
  • The excessively close presence of observers.
